Metro Ethernet or corporate internet: what should you compare?

Compare service scope, upload capacity, handover and support terms before choosing a corporate internet or Metro Ethernet proposal.

A service name does not replace a technical proposal. When considering Metro Ethernet alongside corporate internet, begin with what the connection must deliver. The useful comparison is between documented capacity, endpoints and operating terms, with the physical feasibility checked for the actual premises.

Define the connection’s destination

Clarify whether you need access to the public internet, a private connection between sites, or both. Write down each endpoint and the systems it must reach. An Ethernet handover does not by itself explain where traffic goes or which services are included. Ask the provider to separate internet access from any private transport component in the proposed design.

Compare capacity in both directions

Document downloads and uploads during the busiest working period. Ask for the offered bandwidth in both directions and whether any committed capacity is specified in the contract. State the interface and equipment requirements so the customer network can use the proposed service. Avoid treating a headline speed as proof of application performance or a guarantee that every destination will respond equally.

Read the operating terms beside the design

Review support hours, fault reporting, escalation, planned maintenance and any stated service-level commitments. Ask how measurements would be made and which conditions or exclusions apply. Confirm the responsibility boundary for the access circuit, router, firewall and internal network. The label “Metro Ethernet” alone does not establish a restoration time, independent route or particular availability commitment.

Assess the location before committing to a date

Provide the exact building address and access contact, then ask what survey or installation dependencies remain. Compare one-time work, recurring charges and equipment on the same basis as the corporate internet alternative. MyFi Business’s Metro Ethernet page is a starting point for this discussion; request a written, location-specific comparison and agreed acceptance criteria before scheduling a migration.

PLANNING TAKEAWAY

Choose between complete, address-specific service proposals using capacity, destination, responsibility and operating terms.

The suitability and scope of Metro Ethernet are assessed for each project. No speed, route diversity or service-level commitment is implied by the service name alone.
